The Challenge:
A cosmic, raw egg is simulating reentry into our atmosphere from
outer space. Only, the egg will just be dropped from various heights
from within the confines of our planet. The challenge lays in landing
the egg safely on earth without a single “scratch”, i.e. crack.
Requirements:
1.) Work in Table Groups
2.) Construct a Blueprint Before Construction
3.) Use no more than 50 Straws, 250 Toothpicks, 4 Pieces of Cardboard,
30 cm. of Duct tape and School Glue
4.) Develop one prototype and then Make Changes as Needed for Final Drop
With both the Challenge and Requirements of the project in hand, the students worked diligently to develop a fail-safe container for each of their eggs. The eggs were then dropped from a height of 10, 20 and 30 feet. The students whose eggs survived the 30-foot drop incorporated "crash zones" into their designs which absorbed the impact upon landing. These same "crash zones" are built into today's cars by mechanical engineers to withstand the shock of a collision. The infamous egg drop project was great fun (and a bit messy at times)! Mrs. Roy
